BL # 04: A ONE CRUISES SPECIAL itinerary:  THE UPPER REACHES (Downstream)

This 10 day programme gives you a chance to sail to never-before-explored areas on the Brahmaputra. RV Bir Lachit sails eastwards and encounters one of the most challenging part of navigating this mighty river. Though the river is very wide here we need to find a channel deep enough to navigate through and go beyond and east of Dibrugarh town. We take pride in the fact that no other tourist vessel has sailed in these waters during the winter/ tourist season when the water levels are low due to their comparatively deeper draft.  We visit the Dibru-Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve and National Park. Explore this riverine wilderness looking out for birds and other wild life.

Day 1: Arrive Dibrugarh airport and drive 55 km/ 1 and ½ hour to Guijan  ghat, close to the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and Bio Sphere Reserve. Embark on RV Bir Lachit.

Day 2: After breakfast we take a short road journey to Digboi where the first oil well was struck in Assam more than a hundred years ago – the world’s oldest operating refinery is still going strong here – there is also a very interesting oil museum.

Day 3: Today we explore the riverine wilderness called Dibru-Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve and National Park. Birds are a plenty and so are wild life. Trek through grasslands and high ground looking out for rare orchids.

Day 4: We head down west and after half a day’s sail we arrive at Dibrugarh. Disembark and visit a tea estate. Lunch at a tea estate bungalow. Return to vessel. Overnight.

Day 5: Today we move towards the northern shore of the Brahmaputra as we will encounter very shallow channels on the southern side. This is one of the most challenging part of our cruise as there is only a narrow channel that will allow us to navigate through and go beyond and west of Dibrugarh town; we will indeed have to sail back east some distance and then turn west. (the existing cruise vessels do not negotiate this during the winter/ tourist season when the water levels are low due to their comparatively deeper draft).

Sail downstream and continue towards Dhemaji, stopping at a bank side village of the Mising tribe. Rejoining the vessel we sail past Bogibeel, the site of the new bridge coming up over the river.

Day 6: Morning start cruising downstream up to Dikhow Mukh close to the town of Sibsagar. Disembark and visit a typical Assamese village.

Day 7: Morning drive to Sibsagar, the one-time capital of the Ahoms. Visit Shiva dol or temple which is the tallest temple in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple tank here is believed to be the world’s largest hand-excavated reservoir. From here visit Rang Ghar or the amphitheater and also Kareng Ghar or palace. The Ahom architecture is a mix of Moghul and South East Asian style, unique to these parts. Return to vessel and sail downstream and arrive at Majuli Island.

Day 8: Majuli Island is the world’s largest inhabited river island. Visit ‘satras’ or Hindu monasteries, watch a dance-drama enacted by the monks of the satras. The whole island is now shortlisted for future UNESCO World Heritage status. In the afternoon sail to the southern bank of the river to dock short of Neematighat near the town of Jorhat.

Day 9: Sail up to Neematighat, disembark and drive short distance into the town. Walk in the bazaars, shop for tea and Assam silk. Return to vessel. Farewell dinner.

Day 10: Departure transfer to Jorhat airport.

Itinerary subject to river conditions.
