BL # 02: CULTURAL CRUISE

This cruise may be termed as the culture tour as it highlights the unique habits and customs of the people living on the banks of this great river. Visit Sibsagar, the old capital of the Ahom kings, see ruins that have the influence of Indian and Thai/ Burmese architectures fused into one. Sail on to Majuli Island; with its unique Hindu ‘satras’ or monasteries with a very different culture not found anywhere else. Visit a satra and marvel at a monastic dance drama called ‘Satriya Nritya’ which has been declared as a National Dance. This cruise also takes you to Kaziranga National Park.

Day 1:  Arrive Guwahati, drive 4 and ½ hours to Silghat on the slopes of low hills covered with teak plantations.  One can also arrive at Jorhat to be driven 2 and ½ hrs. Late afternoon take a walk between the river and the hills – butterflies abound here – and come upon an old cave temple.

Day 2:  At the crack of dawn we board our vehicles and drive for about an hour to Kaziranga’s Central Range for an elephant safari, get close to the rhino and other wild life. Kaziranga is a World Heritage Site and the best place in the world to see these the India One-horned Rhinoceros. Other wild life like wild elephant, deer, buffalo and birds make this park a favorite for wild life enthusiasts. Return to your boat for breakfast while we cruise upstream, Kaziranga National Park is on your right. Sail into Vishnath ghat by noon. Walk around this old temple town with an Ahom-period Shiva temple dominating the scene. Return to vessel and sail for the rest of the day.

Day 3:  We are sailing upstream all day. Disembark to walk through a remote village. Relax in the sun deck, let the scenery slowly pass by. By late afternoon we arrive at Dhansiri Mukh, very close to the Eastern range of Kaziranga.

Day 4:  Disembark after breakfast and take a jeep safari in the little-visited Eastern Range, good to see wood land birds for this is much wooded than the other ranges. We return to Bir Lachit and resume sailing upstream.

Day 5:  A day spent on the river. Stroll through a larger village with a school and temple. Interact with school children (when open) and also visit the interesting market.

Day 6:  Bir Lachit casts it moorings early today as we head for Majuli Island. We should be mooring again while you are at breakfast. The whole island is now shortlisted for future UNESCO World Heritage status, for its unique Hindu monasteries or ‘satras’. We visit the Auniati satra, attend a monastic dance performance at Uttar Kamalbari satra before sailing across to Neemati Ghat on the south bank.

Day 7: Drive east to Sibsagar, the erstwhile capital of the Ahoms who ruled Assam for 600 years (1228-1826). We will be visiting some of the edifices they erected – these monuments reflect a blend of Indian and Thai/ Burmese architecture. Visit the Shiva Dol or temple which is the tallest Shiva temple in India. They dug a number of huge tanks and one such tank is right beside this temple.  Drive short distance to Rang Ghar or amphitheatre and the Kareng Ghar (Palace). We return to our vessel now moored at  Dikhou Mukh close to Sibsagar.

Day 8:  We bid farewell to Assam as we drive drive 2 ½ hrs to Dibrugarh airport. Or drive 1 ½  hrs to Jorhat airport.
