Assam & the Northeastern region

Endowed with high mountains and verdant valleys, mighty rivers and forests, tribes and traditions north eastern India is indeed a region to look out for age old and deep rooted traditions, textiles, wild life, birding, village life and more.

The mighty River Brahmaputra has channeled a wide valley running east to west in Assam where civilizations have thrived and many religions, cults, tribal culture have sprung up. The Ahoms came in the 13th century from Thailand who ruled Assam for 600 years and left an indelible mark in the fabric of the Assamese society. The British came towards the end of the Ahom rule bringing with them the wherewithal of industry and enterprise and went about setting up tea estates, coal mining and oil rigs in this mineral rich region. Shakti Cult or Tantrism and Vaishnavism have flourished here - Kamakhya temple, one of the revered shakti shrines in the country, Majuli Island on the River Brahmaputra are testimony to it. All this is accessible from the river or by taking short land excursions.

It is perhaps one of the few places in the world which has two World Heritage Sites, Kaziranga and Manas national parks with probably another - Majuli, the world’s biggest inhabited river island, on its way.

The numerous tribes and sub tribes living here have made it a place of myth and mystery, history and folklore, art and painting, music and dance, handloom and handicrafts.

One good way of seeing it all is by taking a cruise on the River Brahmaputra.
